On top of Kalapathar

Our morning started early packing one climbing bag full of essentials: plastic double boots, crampons, alpine harness, jumars, rappel device, carabiners, helmet and ice axe.. This bag took off early towards our Lobuche base camp with tents and other provisions. The secound bag we packed would go with us to Gorak Shep so we could summit Kalapathar.

Once we packed we had an early breakfast and head up on a three hour trek. When we arrived in Gorak Shep we made ourselves comfortable at the Budda Lodge and devoured an early lunch.

Peter ,one of our team members ,wasn’t feeling well but after luch he felt better and took off with the team at 12:15 for the summit.

The sky was unusually clear and we were all having an amazing day. It takes on average two hours from Gorak Shep to upper Kalapathar. From there the South col is visible. Also there is an array of awesome Himalayan gaints that makes up more for the lung-bursting climb up from Gorak Shep. Immediately east across the Khumbu glacier, Everest soars like a giant black pyramid beyond the jagged white fang of Nuptse, completed by a 360 degree view that includes Ama Dablam, Kang Tega, Thamserku, Pumori, and Changtse.

Our whole team made the summit. What a great day we’ve had.

Todd Forney on behalf of a happy team.
